In the canton of St. Gallen, a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has been discovered. The carcass was burned according to the Swiss Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV), and no meat from the animal entered the food chain. The BSE was discovered during a routine BSE monitoring of a thirteen-year-old cow. This case is unrelated to the atypical BSE discovered in Graubünden in March 2023. Since December 1990, the feeding of animal meal to ruminants has been prohibited in Switzerland, and the BLV considers the disease to be successfully combated in the country. Switzerland is internationally considered to have a negligible BSE risk.
