100 residents of Switzerland selected by lot will discuss healthcare costs in a population council from November. With this project, the universities of Zurich and Geneva want to explore new forms of democracy.

The aim is to examine what such a council can contribute to the debate and to finding solutions to social challenges, according to a press release issued by the participating institutions on Tuesday.

The 100 people for the Population Council were drawn by lot on Tuesday. "They are completely normal, independent people without lobby interests: Electricians sit next to kindergarten teachers and pensioners next to young people on the Population Council," political scientist Nenad Stojanovic, co-initiator of the project, was quoted as saying in the press release. This is the great advantage of such a lottery procedure.

The project is being coordinated by the Center for Democracy Aarau. A political support group with members from all six major parties will accompany the Population Council in its preparation and exchange ideas with the participants drawn by lot.
