A Geneva ex-policeman fired his service pistol around the office in Wild West style while under the influence of alcohol. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison on probation by the Geneva police court on Monday. He had endangered the lives of his colleagues, the judge concluded.

The verdict was handed down two years after the crime. On an evening in October 2022, the now-deposed narcotics inspector had drawn his service pistol and aimed it at a garbage can in the premises of the police station in Geneva. Under the influence of alcohol, he fired seven shots. Ricochets caused one of them to get stuck in the false ceiling, while two projectiles hit a colleague's shoe.

Although he was intoxicated, he then got into a police car to take his colleague, who had injured his foot, to the emergency room. According to the indictment, he ran a red light on the way to the hospital and then improperly switched on the siren and blue lights of the vehicle. The 47-year-old was fined 100 francs for these simple violations of the Road Traffic Act.
