ECtHR judge: “Judgment does not only apply to Switzerland”

The ruling of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) must be seen in a pan-European context, according to Swiss ECtHR judge Andreas Zünd. "The ruling does not simply refer to Switzerland," Zünd told Radio SRF.
The ruling is a landmark judgment for all member states of the Council of Europe, Zünd said on Friday morning on the "Heute Morgen" program on Swiss-German radio SRF. The impetus for the leading judgment simply came from Switzerland with the climate seniors.
According to the court, Switzerland has not fulfilled its duties in terms of climate protection. The Paris Climate Agreement was decisive for the decision, said Zünd. The contents of the agreement are part of Swiss law because the agreement was approved by Switzerland.
The court did not stipulate how exactly Switzerland would comply with the objectives of the agreement. "The means are subject to democratic debate," said Zünd, referring to the ruling. The court does not intervene in the political process.
