Eight cantons voted on 17 substantive proposals

In the canton of Zug, a transparency initiative has been declared invalid due to irregularities. Geneva was the first canton to introduce a ban on extremist symbols before the federal government, while the extension of voting rights for foreigners failed. Ticino approved tax relief for the rich. The results are listed below in alphabetical order:

The canton of Aargau is writing a climate article into its constitution. The electorate approved a corresponding amendment to the constitution with almost 57% of votes in favor.

In the canton of Baselland, the share of renewable energies in total consumption excluding mobility is to be increased to at least 70% by 2030. On Sunday, voters approved the corresponding amendment to the cantonal energy law with 54.3% of the vote in favor.

The Fribourg electorate does not want to enshrine the locations and opening hours of its hospital emergency rooms in the cantonal constitution. They rejected a corresponding initiative with a 62.8 percent "no" vote, but approved the counter-proposal with 68.4 percent "yes" votes. The counter-proposal contains seven measures that include adequate care for all emergencies throughout the canton.

The initiative for a 175 million financial injection for the cantonal hospital was clearly accepted with 79.6 percent of votes in favor.

Geneva approves ban on hate symbols

In the canton of Geneva, extremist symbols will be banned in public in future. The electorate voted in favor of the bill with a majority of almost 85%, making Geneva a pioneer in Switzerland.

With 60.9% of votes against, the people of Geneva rejected an extension of voting rights for foreigners. A relaxation of the minimum requirements for working in crèches was rejected with 56.9% of votes against. A new health law that would have called into question the possibility of euthanasia in retirement and nursing homes in Geneva was also rejected with 76.6% of votes against.

No obligation to install solar systems in new buildings

In the canton of Schaffhausen, homeowners will still not be obliged to build solar installations in the future. Voters clearly rejected a corresponding popular initiative by the Young Greens. If accepted, solar systems would have had to be installed on existing buildings after twelve years at the latest.

In the canton of Schwyz, the debates of the cantonal council can be broadcast live on the internet in future, against the wishes of the government. Voters narrowly approved a corresponding passage in the Cantonal Council's rules of procedure with a majority of 51.9% in favor. During the coronavirus pandemic, the sessions of the Cantonal Council were broadcast live on the internet without there being a legal basis for this.

In the canton of Ticino, high incomes will receive tax relief in future. The canton wants to become more attractive for top managers. The corresponding amendment to the law was approved with 56.9 percent of votes in favor. Left-wing green parties had launched a referendum against the bill.

The amendment to the law on the cantonal pension fund, which includes compensation measures for planned pension cuts for cantonal employees, was narrowly approved with 50.5 percent of votes in favor.

However, the purchase of a former Banca del Gottardo building in Lugano for CHF 76 million was rejected with 59.5 percent of votes against. The building was to be converted into another cantonal courthouse.

Zug transparency initiative invalid

The Zug government has declared the vote on the Young Alternative's transparency initiative and the counter-proposal invalid. The transparency initiative demanded information on the party financing and vested interests of politicians. According to the government, there were irregularities during the count. In some cases, invalid ballot papers were counted. The government council made this decision at an extraordinary meeting on Sunday. Further information has been promised for next Wednesday.

The vote on the cycling initiative, which called for a continuous cycling network in the canton, was valid. It was rejected with 59.5% of votes against.
