The Federal Council is in agreement to facilitate the employment of persons with protected status S. It recommends to accept a corresponding motion of the State Political Commission of the National Council (SPK-N). This motion intends to abolish the current authorization requirement and replace it with a notification requirement.
The Swiss Federal Council has proposed a motion to the Swiss Parliament to allow Ukrainian refugees with temporary protection status in Switzerland to better integrate into the labour market. The Swiss Refugee Council (SPK-N) hopes that this motion will help these refugees to gain access to the Swiss labour market.
The majority of the SPK-N believed that the targeted improvement proposed in their motion could already be implemented. Representatives of the SVP and FDP in the commission rejected the motion.
As of September 2023, over 65,700 people with Status S were living in Switzerland. Status S is granted to refugees from Ukraine and their close relatives. With this status, they are able to take up employment and send their children to school. They are also able to travel abroad and return to Switzerland.
In November 2022, the Swiss Federal Council decided to maintain the Status S until at least March 4th, 2024. The Federal Council will decide in the coming weeks how to proceed with Status S after that date.
