According to environmental organizations, the planned amendment to the Electricity Act is the decisive element for advancing climate protection. This would create the conditions for reducing domestic CO2 emissions, representatives of various environmental organizations announced on Monday.
They presented their arguments from an environmental point of view for the referendum on the so-called "energy jacket decree" on June 9. A total of 18 environmental organizations joined forces to vote in favour of the bill.
The climate crisis is progressing rapidly and is having an impact on people and the environment, the associations announced. As an Alpine country, Switzerland is particularly affected. "The Electricity Act is a milestone in the reduction of CO2 emissions - and for us, climate protection is an important part of comprehensive nature and environmental protection," Raffael Ayé, Managing Director of the environmental protection organization Birdlife Switzerland, was quoted as saying in the press release. The Electricity Act is needed for this.
The environmental associations also argued that the expansion of renewable energies in Germany provided for in the decree would reduce dependence on foreign countries.
The Electricity Act is also compatible with nature conservation, the report continued. "It clarifies where the expansion of renewables will take priority in future - and where not. This is also a clear added value for us environmental associations, for whom weighing up protection and benefits is part of everyday life," said Thomas Vellacott, CEO of WWF Switzerland. In addition, the law also helps to save energy.
