The Chairman of the European Parliament's Delegation to Switzerland, Andreas Schwab, sees it as a good sign that the Federal Council has adopted its negotiating mandate for the EU-Switzerland "stabilization package" so soon after the end of the consultation. After the Council adopts the EU negotiating mandate in mid-March, the way will be clear for negotiations to begin on March 18.
This was announced by the MEP in a press statement on Friday. Due to the European elections in June, both sides should not lose any time. This is because a negotiation result within the landing zones between the EU Commission and the Federal Council presented on December 15, 2023 can only be guaranteed under the current Commission by mid-September.
The CDU politician from Germany said that the start of the negotiations will show how serious the Swiss Federal Council really is about concluding negotiations. He said that the visit to Brussels by Federal President Viola Amherd announced for March 18 gave him reason for cautious optimism. The President's communications department did not confirm this supposed visit to the Keystone-SDA news agency.
