Europe’s most advanced weather satellite put into operation

The European Meteorological Satellite Agency (Eumetsat) put the first third-generation Meteosat satellite into operation on Wednesday. The Meteosat-12 plays a crucial role when it comes to forecasting extreme weather events.
The weather satellite produces high-resolution and precise data, which is made available to national weather services and other users for practical use, Eumetsat announced. This data has a decisive influence on weather forecasts and the understanding of the climate. Weather services can thus predict locations of extreme weather.
"MTG is one of the most innovative and complex meteorological satellite systems ever built," Eumetsat Director General Phil Evans was quoted as saying in the communiqué. "We have worked with the meteorological services of our member states to ensure that they can make the best use of the data. This is essential for one of their most important tasks - the rapid detection and forecasting of extreme weather events so that citizens, authorities and first responders are warned in good time."
Eumetsat is based in Darmstadt, Germany, and monitors weather and climate from space. Switzerland is one of its 30 member states.
