Exhibition with works by Johannes Robert Schürch in Lucerne

Drawings by Swiss artist Johannes Robert Schürch can be seen at the Ahoi-Space in Lucerne from October 23 to November 20. The exhibited works by Schürch, who lived from 1895 to 1941, show people in misery and poverty.
The cabinet exhibition is organized by the Lucerne-based Erica Ebinger-Leutwyler Foundation, which looks after Schürch's estate. A Schürch exhibition has also been on display at the Aargauer Kunsthaus since mid-September and will run until January 12, 2025.
Even during his lifetime, Schürch was described as a painter of misery, the foundation announced on Friday. However, the "but" is characteristic of the existentialist artist. In all the misery he depicted, there are often quiet moments of affection, compassion and humanity.
Originally from the canton of Aargau, Schürch lived and worked in poverty with his mother in Ticino. When he died at the age of 46, he left behind a stylistically broad oeuvre. The estate is being looked after by the Erica Ebinger-Leutwyler Foundation. The founder was the artist's partner.
