The farmers' movement once again took action on Friday to demand fair and appropriate compensation for their products and work. Actions involving hundreds of farmers took place at several locations in Switzerland.
Actions kicked off on Friday evening in Kirchberg in Bern and Estavayer-le-Lac in Fribourg. The farmers used tractors to form the word "Dialog" on a field in Kirchberg, as Urs Haslebacher, one of the movement's spokespersons, told the Keystone-SDA news agency. An estimated 650 tractors took part in the action in Kirchberg, as a video reporter from the Keystone-SDA news agency noted.
Further actions are planned over the next few days in the Lucerne region, in Uster ZH , Gossau SG and in Ticino. The authorities and the police will be informed of the locations of the meetings.
The aim is to draw attention to the concerns of agriculture without blocking traffic or annoying consumers, according to the organizers.
Dialogue after wake-up call
The farmers' protests in Switzerland began a few weeks ago with a "wake-up call". Numerous actions took place. The farmers emphasize that the mood on farms is still tense. The "wake-up call" must now be followed by a "dialog at eye level" with politicians, the administration and, in particular, the major distributors and their processing plants.
Among other things, farmers are calling for more stability and planning security. This is necessary in order to make investments and develop the farms in the long term.
However, the farmers are particularly concerned with adequate compensation for their products and their work, as well as appreciation. Public funding for agriculture must at least be maintained in view of the increasing demands, according to a press release issued on Friday. Responsibility must also be upheld by market players and the ever-increasing quality requirements must be compensated.
