FDP and Greens Lose Ground in Bern Canton as SPS and SVP Make Gains

In the canton of Bern, the Swiss People's Party (SVP) and the Social Democratic Party (SP) each won one seat in the National Council, while the Green Party and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) each lost one seat. The other parties maintained their holdings. This was announced by the State Chancellery on Sunday evening. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) achieved a voter share of 29.3 percent in the canton of Bern. It won one seat and remains the clear strongest force in the canton. In total, it will be represented with eight seats in the National Council. The other winner of the National Council elections in the canton of Bern is the SP. The women's and men's lists together received 19.8 percent of the votes. Four women and one man were elected. The Green Party of Bern has lost one seat in the cantonal parliament and will now be represented by only three seats in the Grand Chamber. They received nine percent of the votes. The Green Liberal Party (GLP) in the Canton of Bern is now on an equal footing with the Greens. It was able to retain its three seats with its three previous representatives. The voter turnout was 49.7 percent, 2.3 percent higher than four years ago. In total, 776 candidates ran on 39 lists. New Faces in the National Council. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) of the Canton of Bern will have at least four new members in the Grand Council: Thomas Knutti, Katja Riem, Werner Salzmann and Ernst Wandfluh. However, Werner Salzmann is currently a member of the Council of States and should be re-elected in the second round of voting. In this case, Hans Jürg Rüegsegger would take his place. Ursula Zybach has been newly elected to the Swiss People's Party (SP). National Councillor Flavia Wasserfallen of the SP is still in the running for the Council of States elections and has a good chance of being elected.
