The Federal Assembly can seal the transfer of Moutier from the canton of Bern to the Jura next year. The Federal Council forwarded the corresponding dispatch to Parliament on Wednesday.
If the Federal Assembly approves the change of canton, Switzerland's most significant intercantonal conflict will be brought to an end after decades, according to the Federal Council's communiqué.
In 2013, the population of the Bernese Jura voted in favor of remaining part of the canton of Bern. Only the voters of Moutier decided in 2021 to become part of the canton of Jura.
The cantons of Bern and Jura approved the change at the ballot box last September. If the Federal Assembly gives the green light, Moutier can become part of the Jura at the beginning of 2026.
