The Federal Chancellery should have been more proactive in informing the public about the suspected forged signatures on initiatives. Federal Chancellor Viktor Rossi admitted this in an interview.

At the moment, however, there is no evidence that an initiative has been voted on that may have come about illegally, Rossi said on Thursday on Swiss Radio SRF's "Tagesgespräch" program.

In-depth monitoring is planned. This is because there is currently no overview of how many forged signatures are detected at municipal level. The aim is to get a better picture of this and a better insight into where the problem is becoming more acute. Then the law enforcement authorities could also take targeted action.

From now on, not only lists from conspicuous cantons, but initiative forms from all cantons will be examined more intensively. This includes the dual control principle and a comprehensive check. The Federal Chancellery takes the issue very seriously. Falsifications are unacceptable and must be prosecuted, said Rossi.

He has no doubts about the legality of initiatives that have been voted on. The review process has been in place for decades, "I trust it", says Rossi. A tried and tested system now needs to be made watertight.

The aim now is to bring all stakeholders to the table, not only communes and cantons, parties and associations, but also collective organizations and initiative committees. For example, the aim is to find out what regulatory options are available. After all, there are many reputable collection organizations. And there are currently no plans to ban commercial collection.
