Next Monday, Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis will chair a meeting at the United Nations Security Council on the impact of scientific and technological development on security and peace worldwide. "Promoting sustainable peace" is one of Switzerland's priorities during its membership of the body up to and including the end of 2024.

The rapid progress of new technologies opens up great opportunities, but also harbors risks for peace and security in the world of tomorrow. The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced on Friday that these must be recognized at an early stage in order to be able to react to them.

One example of this is neurotechnology: neurotechnology could be used to treat traumatized war victims or people injured by mines with new possibilities. However, there is also a risk that neurotechnological interventions could increase the performance of soldiers in conflicts and thus influence warfare.

Switzerland is presiding over the United Nations Security Council (UN) this October and, as Chair of the Council, has placed the topic of "The impact of scientific developments on peace and security" on the agenda, it was reported. A scientist and experts from International Geneva have been invited to the meeting next Monday.

With this Security Council briefing, Switzerland is focusing on its priority of promoting sustainable peace, the FDFA added. During Switzerland's first presidency of the Council in May 2023, Federal Councillor Cassis had already emphasized in New York that building mutual trust is central to peace and security.
