Prior to the announcement of the canceled podium at the University of Fribourg, Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis received his Slovakian counterpart Juraj Blanár in Bern on Tuesday.
The talks focused on bilateral relations, Switzerland's European policy and the geopolitical situation, in particular the war in Ukraine. Both delegations emphasized the need for good cooperation in multilateral forums to promote peace and security in Europe, according to the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA).
In this context, both countries acknowledged the close bilateral relations between them. Their cooperation in the areas of health, sustainable tourism and vocational education and training contributes to cohesion and stability in Europe, explained Federal Councillor Cassis. According to the FDFA, Switzerland is supporting various projects in Slovakia with CHF 44.2 million until 2029.
Another topic of discussion was the European security architecture and, in particular, the war in Ukraine. The two counterparts spoke mainly about the reconstruction of Ukraine and the need to establish a just and lasting peace.
Federal Councillor Cassis also took the opportunity to inform the Slovakian foreign minister about Switzerland's experience as a member of the UN Security Council, according to the FDFA. Slovakia is currently running for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period 2028 to 2029.
