Federal Councillor Beat Jans reaffirmed his asylum plans at the SP party conference on Saturday. He will introduce 24-hour procedures for people from countries with little chance of asylum, the Minister of Justice told over 500 Social Democrat delegates in Le Grand-Saconnex GE.

"The same procedures are followed as for longer procedures. Every applicant receives legal representation and can appeal to the Federal Administrative Court. As things stand at present, there has not been a single appeal in these proceedings at the pilot in Zurich," said Jans.

The aim is to improve assistance for those genuinely in need of protection. "If we see that we cannot guarantee the procedural rights of those affected when implementing the law throughout Switzerland, then we will go and solve this problem too," said the Federal Councillor.

The new head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) explained that the procedural rights of those affected must be guaranteed. Jans announced the tightening of asylum procedures at a media conference on Tuesday during a visit to the federal asylum center in Chiasso TI.

Call for solidarity

In view of the war in Ukraine, which has been going on for two years, Jans called for international solidarity. Switzerland supports the sanctions against Russia and is committed to humanitarian and international efforts, continued the Minister of Justice.

However, Jans noted that the Swiss population had made the most important contribution by taking in 65,000 refugees. "Solidarity with the Ukrainians was and is great. And it must remain so. Because the killing by Putin's war machine continues," Jans added.
