On Tuesday, the Federal Criminal Court rejected the objections raised by the defense in the first week of the 1MDB trial. The court can now proceed with the questioning of the two defendants, who are facing charges of fraud and money laundering.
The lawyers criticized in particular the 213-page indictment with footnotes as well as the evaluation of the data stolen by a former employee of the oil company Petrosaudi by the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG). The Criminal Court considered these preliminary issues to be irrelevant and rejected them.
The court can now proceed with the questioning of the right-hand man of the main defendant, the head of Petrosaudi. The Swiss-British dual national is accused of dishonest management, fraud, active bribery of foreign public officials, serious money laundering and misconduct in public office.
According to federal prosecutors, the two men are alleged to have embezzled 1.8 billion US dollars to the detriment of the Malaysian fund 1MDB.
