Federal statisticians expect a significant increase in the number of apprentices and students in Switzerland by 2033. Growth is likely to be particularly strong in the areas of information technology, healthcare and social services.
According to the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), this development is a consequence of the high birth rates between 2003 and 2020. The associated demographic growth will also be reflected in post-compulsory education, the Federal Statistical Office wrote in a press release on Friday.
According to the calculations, the number of apprentices in their first year of vocational training is likely to increase by 10 percent by 2033. The number of grammar school students is likely to increase by 17 percent, while the number of students at technical secondary schools is expected to rise by 19 percent. Overall, there should be around 450,000 learners at upper secondary level in 2033, around 60,000 more than in the current year.
The Federal Office expects an increase of 24% in the number of baccalaureate degrees. A total of 46,000 university admission certificates are expected to be issued in 2033. This year, the figure was 37,500.
Accordingly, the federal government is also expecting more students at universities. It is forecasting growth of 17% at universities and universities of applied sciences, and as much as 25% at universities of teacher education.
