The Feldschlösschen brewery increased its turnover last year despite lower beer sales. The traditional company from Rheinfelden sees great growth potential in non-alcoholic beers and mixed beer beverages.

However, the gloomy consumer sentiment depressed sales volumes by 2 percent in 2023, as the brewery and beverage retailer announced on Wednesday. Nevertheless, Feldschlösschen defended its leading market position in Switzerland, the company emphasized.

In addition, turnover rose by 4 percent despite the falling volumes. This is due to the fact that Feldschlösschen was able to make gains in beverage categories with higher prices, as a spokeswoman for the company explained to the news agency AWP. Sales prices were not increased, she emphasized.

Less desire for beer

Apparently, however, the Swiss are drinking less and less beer. Feldschlösschen felt the effects of this particularly in the retail trade, where beer sales fell by 5 percent. Overall, the volume of beer sold by the long-established company fell by 4 percent. This corresponds to the decline in the entire Swiss beer market.

Despite this, the Rheinfeld-based group was able to increase sales in the gastronomy segment, its strongest sales area. Here, the company's sales of beer and other beverages - ranging from mineral water and soft drinks to wine - increased by 5%.

Non-alcoholic increasingly popular

Non-alcoholic beers are becoming increasingly popular. Feldschlösschen has recorded sales growth of over 10 percent in this area. According to Feldschlösschen, non-alcoholic beers now account for a good 6 percent of the entire Swiss beer market.

The Rheinfeld-based company has been promoting this beer category for several years. The aim is to appeal to new consumer groups with non-alcoholic beers and mixed beer beverages, according to the company. Feldschlösschen also wants to exploit this potential in the future.

Founded in 1876, the brewery has been part of the Danish brewery group Carlsberg since 2000. According to figures, every fourth beer consumed in Switzerland is a Feldschlösschen brand.
