Female mountaineer falls 100 meters down the Matterhorn

A female mountaineer had a fatal accident on the Matterhorn on Thursday. The mountaineer fell about 100 meters down the east face at an altitude of around 3,460 meters above sea level.

Third parties who witnessed the fall alerted the rescue services, according to the Valais cantonal police. They were only able to determine that the climber had died. The formal identification of the deceased is underway.

According to the police, the climber had left the Hörnli hut in Zermatt early in the morning with the aim of climbing the 4478-metre-high Matterhorn via the Hörnli ridge on her own.

The public prosecutor's office has launched an investigation in collaboration with the cantonal police to establish the exact circumstances of the accident.
