For the cost brake initiators, the problem is being rolled around in front of them

Following its rejection, the initiators of the cost brake initiative expect politicians to continue to push the problem of rising healthcare costs. The opponents saw the No vote as a sign of the population wanting access to the healthcare system for all.

On Sunday, Lorenz Hess, a member of the National Council from the center of Bern, said on the Swiss television channel SRF that an opportunity had been missed. The electorate had been afraid of a reduction in services. The service providers had mobilized strongly with this fear.

The service providers feared that their sinecures would be ransacked. Before services had to be cut, there was still a lot of potential for savings. Now the issue is going into an endless loop. If savings proposals were put on the table, there would always be someone who would say "not like that, not now". His party had fought for the initiative alone.

National Councillor Barbara Gysi (SP/SG), speaking on behalf of the opposing committee, explained that the population would maintain access to the healthcare system for all. The initiative would have led to certain benefits being removed from basic insurance.

Linking healthcare costs only to economic development is not enough. Ageing and medical progress must also be taken into account.
