Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis will address the United Nations in New York on Thursday and Friday to mark the second anniversary of the outbreak of war in Ukraine. The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will take part in the debates of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly on the situation in Ukraine, as well as in a parallel event focusing on humanitarian demining.

Various bilateral meetings are also on the Foreign Minister's agenda, as announced by the FDFA on Tuesday.

At the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday, Mr. Cassis will give his first speech on the topic of humanitarian demining in Ukraine. According to the FDFA, the contamination of a third of Ukraine's territory - four times the size of Switzerland - with mines and other munitions has dramatic consequences both for the local population and for global food security.

Their elimination is a prerequisite for the reconstruction process in Ukraine and the return of displaced persons. Switzerland is strongly committed to this issue and will organize a "Ukraine Mine Action Conference" at ministerial level in October 2024.

On Friday, February 23, Mr. Cassis will address the General Assembly and then the UN Security Council. The two-year war in Ukraine will be the focus of these two annual international meetings in New York.

The head of the FDFA will reiterate Switzerland's call for compliance with the UN Charter and international humanitarian law as well as Switzerland's commitment to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine, the FDFA added. At these two multilateral forums, Mr Cassis will recall Switzerland's intention to organize a high-level conference for peace in Ukraine.
