The 38th edition of the Fribourg International Film Festival (FIFF) has 100 films from 49 countries in its program. These are characterized by formal ingenuity. Many of them are also humorous, as the organizers announced on Wednesday.

"The FIFF has always programmed films from countries where there is often not much to laugh about. Surprisingly, in the 38th edition of the festival, there is a pinch of humor in almost half of the feature-length films in the competition," Thierry Jobin, artistic director of the festival, is quoted as saying in the press release.

For example, the Chinese film "Day Tripper", which is an absurd chronicle of everyday life. Or the Moroccan road movie "Déserts", which comes across in the style of a quirky western. One of the world premieres among the competition films is the "extremely immoral Peruvian family dystopia "Cuadrilátero", as stated in the press release.

These films, when they play with the genre of the western, for example, are also examples of the formal ingenuity of the filmmakers. They are also reminiscent of the bizarre universes of great filmmakers such as Wes Anderson, Roy Andersson and Jacques Tati, according to the FIFF.

In the two international competitions, 12 feature-length films and 16 short films will be entered, the majority of which come from Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Films from North Macedonia

In addition to the competition, the world's first panorama of filmmaking in North Macedonia is on the program in the New Territory section. For the Diaspora section, French-Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani has selected six lesser-known films from her home country. She is thus moving away from the great Iranian film classics.

French director Michel Gondry plays his Carte Blanche with his six favorite films. In it, he reflects his own experimental film universe. This year's Genre Cinema section is dedicated to hip-hop culture, which itself is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Films about figures from the music, dance and graffiti milieus are planned.

The 38th FIFF runs from March 15-24. Of the 100 films in the program, five are world premieres, another five are international and European premieres, and forty are Swiss premieres.
