The delegates of the Green Liberal Party (GLP) adopted the slogans for the upcoming referendums on Saturday. There was a clear "no" to the AHV and pension initiatives, but they said "yes" to the reform of occupational pensions.

With 142 no votes against zero yes votes and six abstentions, the result for the trade unions' AHV initiative was the clearest. State benefits should be based on need, the party wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The 13th AHV pension would largely be paid out to those who do not need it. Instead, targeted measures are needed for the poorest pension households.

The GLP delegates also rejected the Young Liberals' pension initiative with 104 votes against, 27 in favor and 18 abstentions. It was a "socio-political lawnmower", the party wrote in a press release. A simple adjustment of the reference retirement age without accompanying measures would not be very effective in solving the problem. This would be unfair and mainly burden the middle classes. The two initiatives will be put to the people on March 3, 2024.

With 142 votes in favor, 4 against and two abstentions, the Green Liberals clearly said yes to the reform of occupational pensions. This would create greater intergenerational fairness and close pension gaps for part-time employees and women in particular. The voters are expected to decide in June 2024. These slogans adopted by the GLP are in line with those of the centrists. Their delegates also met in Thun on Saturday for the DM.

Self-criticism after election defeat

In October, the GLP lost six out of sixteen National Council seats in the national elections. "I am hoping for a healthy dose of self-criticism from everyone," said party president Grossen in his opening speech at the delegates' meeting. After this "regrettable bloodletting", it was time to focus on the essentials.

Grossen held out the prospect of continuing to fight for a change in the electoral system - from the current single proportional representation to double proportional representation. The latter would reflect the will of the voters more clearly.

He also criticized the Federal Council's magic formula once again. "Our government has not been moving with the times for years," he said, referring to the world's major crises. The political center of the country is clearly underrepresented in the Federal Council. A new magic formula is therefore needed to adequately represent these centrist forces.

Most recently, Grossen addressed the conflict in Israel and found clear words: "It is our collective responsibility to ensure that Jews can live freely and safely in Switzerland. That is why we condemn anti-Semitism in no uncertain terms." Switzerland is a liberal, freedom-loving and tolerant country for everyone.
