GLP wants longer deadline for higher army spending

The Green Liberals only want to increase military spending to one percent of GDP by 2035 - and not by 2030. They reject cuts in international cooperation in favor of the army.
Patrick Hässig (GLP/ZH) said on behalf of his parliamentary group that the longer deadline was justifiable in terms of financial policy and certainly not wrong in terms of security policy.
During the National Council debate on the army bill on Wednesday, Hässig expressed doubts that the large chamber would be able to agree on counter-financing for the CHF 4 billion increase in the budget for the army requested by the other conservative parties.
The Zurich National Councillor called for the focus to be placed on new dangers such as cyber attacks and disinformation and the threat of terrorist attacks. These would be the greatest threats in the future.
Hässig rejected the idea of cutting back on international cooperation. Switzerland could contribute to stability in crisis-ridden countries, which would also make them safer. Making savings here in favor of the army would be cynical and counterproductive.
