A gondola lift in the Valais ski resort of Verbier was temporarily evacuated on New Year's Eve due to a fire. According to the police, unknown persons had fired fireworks from a cabin and started a bush fire.
The fire broke out at around 2.30 p.m. on Sunday in the municipality of Val de Bagnes in the Le Grangeret area, as reported by the Valais cantonal police on Monday. The site of the fire was in the immediate vicinity of the gondola lift between Le Châble and Verbier. The cable car was evacuated for safety reasons.
The guests already in the gondolas were driven to the station one by one, said a police spokesman at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. No one was injured.
The emergency services brought the fire under control after around two hours. After initial investigations, the police assumed that unknown persons had fired fireworks and firecrackers from a cabin of the cable car. Investigators were looking for witnesses.
