The Gotthardstrassentunnel, connecting Göschenen UR and Airolo TI, was reopened on Friday after a five-day closure. On Sunday, concrete parts had fallen from the ceiling onto the road. The opening was an hour earlier than expected, as the Swiss Federal Roads Office (Astra) announced in the evening. The repair and cleaning work in the tunnel, as well as the tests of the operating and safety equipment, took less time than expected. A steel structure was installed as a replacement for the damaged intermediate ceiling. In the first phase, the speed limit in the affected section is 60 km/h instead of 80 km/h. The Astra assumes that the damage to the intermediate ceiling was caused by tensions in the mountain range, forming a 25-meter long crack. The closure of the Gotthardstrassentunnel coincided with the closure of one of the two tunnel tubes of the Gotthardbasistunnel due to a derailment of a freight train. This caused concern among the Ticino politicians and businesses due to the simultaneous restrictions on road and rail traffic.nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
