One day after the accident on the Rickenstrasse near Wattwil SG, the police confirmed that the fatal victims were the 76- and 75-year-old grandparents and their 9-year-old grandson.

The pensioner couple and their grandson were driving from Wattwil along Rickenstrasse at around 4.15 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. On a slight right-hand bend, they crossed into the oncoming lane on a stretch of road where the speed limit was 80 km/h and collided head-on with an oncoming Postbus.

The impact caused their car to skid back into a car behind it. The pensioner couple and their grandson died at the scene of the accident.

Police rule out overtaking maneuvers

There is no suspicion that the driver was traveling at excessive speed, explained a media spokesperson for the St. Gallen cantonal police on request. Based on information and statements from those involved in the accident, an overtaking maneuver could also be ruled out.

The 68-year-old Postbus driver suffered leg injuries, among other things. He is still in hospital. Some of the several dozen passengers in the Postbus were slightly injured. The 49-year-old woman in the car that was hit escaped without injury.

The two older deceased were Germans from the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, according to the police. The boy was also a German citizen, but lived in the region.

The pass road between Wattwil and Ricken was closed until late in the evening on Thursday.
