Green Party Loses Up to 30 Percentage Points in Local Elections

The Green Party lost voter shares in more than nine out of ten municipalities in the elections on Sunday. The biggest loss was in Campo TI with almost 30 percentage points. In contrast, the Swiss People's Party gained in nine out of ten municipalities. In the last elections in 2019, the Greens in the municipality achieved a voter share of 33.8 percent, but on Sunday only 4.0 percent, according to an evaluation by Keystone-SDA based on figures from the Federal Statistical Office (BFS). In Tenniken BL, the loss was the second largest at 21.6 percentage points. The Swiss People's Party (SVP) achieved better results than in the last elections in around nine out of ten municipalities. The biggest increase was recorded in the 500-inhabitant village of Törbel VS, where the SVP gained 25.2 percentage points compared to the 2019 elections. Closely followed by the canton of Vaud's municipality of Villars-Epeney, with an increase of 24.5 percentage points. The Greens achieved a better result than in the last elections in 206 municipalities, contrary to the national trend. The greatest effect was seen in Bister VS, where they gained 11.6 percentage points. In Switzerland, the Swiss People's Party (SVP) saw a national trend of losses in the 2019 elections. However, 462 municipalities bucked this trend, with Gonten AI leading the way, where the SVP lost 49.8 percentage points. ©Keystone/SDA
