In Geneva, vehicles will in future be taxed according to their environmental impact. According to preliminary results, the SVP initiative to halve motor vehicle taxes was rejected with 51.1% of the vote.
The counter-proposal, however, was accepted with 56.5 percent of the votes, as announced by the State Chancellery on Sunday. This provides for a tax based on CO2 emissions to encourage the purchase of more environmentally friendly vehicles.
The counter-proposal was supported by all parties except the SVP and the Mouvement Citoyens Genevois (MCG).
