Hannes Germann (SVP), member of the Council of States for Schaffhausen, is stepping down after 16 years as President of the Swiss Association of Communes (SGV). His successor will be Mathias Zopfi (Greens), a member of the Council of States from Glarus.

Germann will no longer be standing for office in the general election on June 20, the SGV announced on Wednesday. The SVP politician has been SGV President since 2008 and previously sat on the Board of Directors for nine years.

The Board of Directors is proposing Green Party member of the Council of States Zopfi to the General Assembly as his successor. The 40-year-old has experience at all three levels of government thanks to his previous work as a municipal councillor and Vice-President of the municipality of Glarus Süd, as a member of the cantonal parliament and, since 2020, as a member of the Council of States.
