The 53-year-old Bernese SVP politician Hans Jörg Rüegsegger is a new member of the National Council. Rüegsegger was the first replacement for National Councillor Werner Salzmann, who was elected to the Council of States.
The Bernese cantonal government declared the 53-year-old farmer from Riggisberg elected, as it announced on Thursday. At the same time, the Bernese government confirmed the silent election of Salzmann and Flavia Wasserfallen (SP) to the Council of States.
Both had received the most votes in the first ballot. All other potential candidates have withdrawn their candidacy for the second ballot. A second round of voting will therefore not take place on November 19, the cantonal government confirmed.
