A helicopter crashed during maintenance work early on Wednesday morning in the Niouc area of Val d'Anniviers in Valais. The pilot, who was alone on board, was injured.

He was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Sion, according to the Valais cantonal police. The accident occurred at around 08:30 while working on a pressure line. For reasons not yet known, the helicopter collided with a cable and then crashed. The helicopter was completely destroyed in the accident, a police spokesperson told the Keystone-SDA news agency.

In the afternoon, the police announced on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that the crash site could not be flown over within a radius of three kilometers. The directive was issued by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) due to the recovery of the wreckage and for investigation purposes, the police spokesperson added.

The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (Sust) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) is responsible for the criminal investigation in collaboration with the Valais cantonal police.

The helicopter that crashed is not an aircraft belonging to the Valais airlines Air-Glaciers, Air Zermatt or Rega, according to an inquiry with these companies. According to information available to Keystone-SDA, the aircraft belongs to a company from Sion, which specializes in particular "in aerial work in the Alpine environment". The company concerned did not wish to comment.
