Israeli President Izchak Herzog warns that Iran and the militias it supports are endangering global stability.
"If the world wants to maintain the post-World War II world order in an appropriate way, it must fight terror and support the fight against terror," he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos. "There is an evil empire emanating from Tehran and spending billions of dollars on weapons."
Israel is currently waging a war "for the free world", Herzog continued. If Israel did not exist, it would be Europe's turn. "Because these barbaric jihadists want to drive us all out of the region." The USA could also be next. Israel's president recalled that Iran had "attacked the armed forces of the United States" a few days ago.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards fired missiles at targets in Iraq and Syria on Tuesday night. According to eyewitnesses, several missiles struck near a US consulate under construction. US troops were not hit. Iran's Revolutionary Guard described the target in Iraq as the espionage headquarters of the Israeli secret service Mossad.
Herzog praised the international coalition fighting the Iran-backed Huthi militia in Yemen. In response to the repeated attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea, the USA and Great Britain, with the support of allies, had repeatedly carried out military strikes against the Huthi.
Since the beginning of the Gaza war between Israel and the Islamist Hamas, the Houthi militia has repeatedly attacked freighters with an alleged Israeli connection.
The Houthi, Hamas and other militias belong to the so-called "Axis of Resistance", a network of groups fighting against Israel that are supported by Tehran. Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, the Jewish state has been considered Iran's arch-enemy alongside the USA. The state leadership in Tehran denies the Jewish state the right to exist.
