The Swiss Federal Council elections on October 25th saw the re-election of Hans Wicki in Nidwalden and Andrea Caroni in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, both of whom are members of the Free Democratic Party (FDP). Eva Herzog of the Social Democratic Party (SP) is also likely to be re-elected in Basel-Stadt. In Zurich, Daniel Jositsch (SP) is expected to be re-elected, while the FDP's Ruedi Noser is not running again and it is uncertain if the FDP will retain the seat. In Waadt, Pierre-Yves Maillard (SP) and Pascal Broulis (FDP) are neck-and-neck in the race for the two seats. In Genf, Mauro Poggia (MCG) is in the lead, followed by Carlo Sommaruga (SP) and Lisa Mazzone (Grüne). In Solothurn, Pirmin Bischof (Mitte) is likely to be re-elected, while in Glarus, FDP candidate Benjamin Mühlemann is in the lead. In Thurgau, Brigitte Häberli (Mitte) and Jakob Stark (SVP) are in the lead. Four of the 46 seats in the Council of States have already been filled, with eight members not running for re-election. The second round of elections will take place between November 12th and 26th. Currently, the centre holds 14 seats, the FDP 12, the SVP 8, the SP 6 and the Greens 5. Daniel Fässler (Mitte/AI) and Erich Ettlin (Mitte/OW) have already been confirmed in their positions.
