International Meeting on Missing Persons on Migration Routes in Geneva

On Wednesday and Thursday, Switzerland is hosting an international meeting in Geneva to address the issue of missing persons on migration routes. The meeting will bring together more than 70 representatives from national authorities and international organisations to exchange knowledge and identify useful instruments and “good practices” to strengthen international cooperation. Since 2014, the International Organization for Migration has registered almost 60,000 missing and deceased migrants worldwide, and it is believed that there is a large number of unreported cases. The meeting is organised by the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration and the Department of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with Gambia and the Secretariat of the Rabat Process. Switzerland has been actively involved in the Rabat Process since 2006, which serves as a platform for inter-state migration dialogue between over 50 countries from North, West and Central Africa, Europe, the European Union, the West African Economic Community and selected international organisations. Switzerland has been addressing the issue of missing migrants for several years and in May 2021, it launched the “Global Alliance for the Missing” with the International Committee of the Red Cross. Currently, the alliance has 12 member states, with Switzerland and Mexico as co-chairs.
