At a reception in the Vatican on Friday, Pope Francis joked around with a good hundred comedians from all over the world, including stars such as Whoopi Goldberg and Chris Rock. Comedian Hazel Brugger was there from Switzerland.
The 30-year-old posted pictures from the Vatican on Instagram, in which she can be seen with various comedians from around the world, including US talk show hosts Conan O'Brian and Stephen Colbert and US actress Julia Louis-Dreyfuss from the series "Seinfeld".
"You have the power to spread cheer and smiles," the Pope told the comedians. "You are among the few who have the ability to speak to very different people from different generations, backgrounds and cultures."
"Instead of giving a speech, I just do this," said the 87-year-old head of the church with a grin, sticking a thumb in his ear and wiggling his other fingers.
The audience was attended by 107 comedians from 15 countries, including Italy, the USA, France and even East Timor. According to the Vatican, Annette Frier, Michael Mittermeier and Torsten Sträter were among those who traveled from Germany.
Whoopi Goldberg, who played a fake nun in two "Sister Act" films, had joked in the past that she would offer the Pope a role in "Sister Act 3". When asked if she brought the subject up at the face-to-face meeting, she said on Friday that it wasn't the right moment, "I'll probably write him an email".
