The federal government, the cantons and other partners will be rehearsing how to deal with an accident at the Gösgen SO nuclear power plant next week. The so-called overall emergency exercise will also include helicopter flights and transportation with army trucks, as announced by the Federal Office for Civil Protection (Babs) on Thursday.
In addition to emergency protection at the Gösgen power plant, the exercise will also focus on preparations for a large-scale evacuation, according to Babs. Full-scale emergency drills (GNU) take place every two years. The operation of the nuclear power plant will not be affected by the exercise.
On Tuesday, November 5, the transportation of generators and pumps from the emergency material store in Reitnau AG to the Gösgen nuclear power plant will be rehearsed. In Staffelbach AG, the breakdown of an army truck will be simulated, which would require the use of a helicopter for onward transportation.
Swissgrid is taking part in a GNU for the first time. The national grid operator will be testing its crisis organization in real time. On Wednesday, November 6 and Thursday, November 7, measurement teams will be out and about in the canton of Solothurn and neighboring areas to train in measuring radioactivity.
The aim of the exercise is to train authorities and emergency organizations for an accident at the nuclear power plant. In addition to the Gösgen nuclear power plant and various federal authorities, several cantonal laboratories, cantonal command staff and technical companies such as SBB and PostBus are also taking part.
