The three museums of the "Plateforme 10" in Lausanne are presenting several exhibitions to mark the 100th anniversary of Surrealism. The aim is to present one of the "most fascinating and influential" art movements, the organizers announced on Friday.
In 1924, the French poet and writer André Breton published the "Manifesto of Surrealism", thereby founding one of the most important art movements of the 20th century. The three cantonal museums in Lausanne's "Plateforme 10" museum quarter are celebrating the 100th anniversary and showing "a surrealist season in the form of an extended collective reflection", according to the press release.
The exhibition "Surrealism - The Great Game", which takes a cross-temporal approach, weaves a web of echoes and associations with the institutional history of the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts (MCBA) and the museum's collection, the organizers wrote in a press release. The exhibition builds on the research for the 1987 exhibition "La Femme et le Surréalisme" and continues the reflection in the prism of the challenges facing today's society.
Man Ray at Photo Elysée
The Photo Elysée Museum is presenting an exhibition on Man Ray entitled "Liberating Photography", which aims to illustrate the full range of creativity of "this outstanding photographer". Ray is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
In collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany, the Musée cantonal de design et d'arts appliqués contemporains (Mudac) will be showing "Objects of Desire - Surrealism and Design", an exhibition that aims to bring visitors closer to the close dialog between surrealism and design over the last hundred years. Objects by Salvador Dali, Iris van Herpen and Meret Oppenheim will be on display.
At the same time, Mudac is showing the exhibition "Alchemy - Surrealism and Glass Art", a selection of works from the museum's collection, some of which are being exhibited for the first time and which aims to show the movement's legacy among contemporary glass artists.
The exhibition "Surrealisme: Le Grand Jeu" at the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts in Lausanne runs from April 12 to August 25.
"Libérer la photographie" at the Photo Elysée is on display from March 29 to August 4.
Die Ausstellungen "Objets de désir: Surrealisme et design" sowie "Alchimie: Surréalisme et art verrier" laufen vom 8. März bis zum 4. August im Musée cantonal de design et d'arts appliqués contemporains.
