A historic turnaround has taken place in Lucerne's city government in the second round of voting. Melanie Setz (SP) won one of the three seats still up for grabs, pushing the GLP out of the executive. The left now has a majority on the city council.

With 10,126 votes, Melanie Setz achieved the third-best result, as announced on Sunday in Lucerne's town hall. Stefan Sägesser (GLP) missed out on the election by 1065 votes. "I very much regret that we as the GLP are no longer here and I also regret it for myself personally. I would have hoped that we would continue to have a balanced municipal government," Sägesser told Keystone-SDA.

Former city councillor Franziska Bitzi Staub (center) was also re-elected at her second attempt. With 12,968 votes, she achieved the best election result. The second seat was taken by candidate Marco Baumann (FDP) with 11,883 votes.

Zoé Stehlin (Juso, 7901 votes) and Julian Gerber (Young Greens, 7863 votes) missed out on the election. Voter turnout was 41.03%, with a total of 21,699 valid ballot papers cast.

In the first round of voting on April 28, the previous mayor Beat Züsli (SP) and Korintha Bärtsch (Greens) were elected to the city government. The SP and Greens now have a left-wing majority in the five-member body. Despite closing ranks, the middle-class parties were unable to prevent this.
