The canton of Lucerne can partially rebuild and renovate its 50-year-old civil protection training center in Sempach. The voters approved a special loan of CHF 30.3 million for the CHF 37.8 million project.

According to the State Chancellery on Sunday, the voters approved the project with a 70.6% share of votes in favor (106,546 to 44,282 votes). The voter turnout was 55.6 percent.

Built in 1971, the training center for civil defence is outdated and in poor condition. The canton has not invested in renovating the building since 2007, in anticipation of a new construction project. However, this was abandoned in 2014.

With the approval of the voters, a new project can now be realized over the next few years. The instruction building will be renovated, while the administration building, pavilions and barracks will be demolished and replaced by new buildings. This will also enable the site to be used more efficiently in the future. The new facility, which will also be used by other cantons, is scheduled to go into operation in 2028.
