Around a month before the 46th Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival opens, the organizers in Saarbrücken have announced the competition films and the programme.

A total of 19 prizes worth 128,500 euros will be awarded at the festival from January 20 to 26, 2025. This includes a new "Treatment Development" prize for the first time, endowed with 10,000 euros, which was created in collaboration with ZDF/Das kleine Fernsehspiel. It supports the research and development of material for a feature-length debut film.

At 1.6 million euros, the total budget is slightly above the previous year's level. In addition to many sponsors, the largest supporters include the state capital of Saarbrücken and the federal state.

There are 57 films competing for the awards in the four competition categories of feature film, documentary, medium-length film and short film, including 38 world premieres. A total of 151 films will be shown in 225 screenings during the festival week. According to artistic director Svenja Böttger, the MOP team screened 1150 films for the festival.

The Max Ophüls Prize (MOP) is considered the most important festival for German-language film and stands for the discovery of talent from Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
