Mauro Poggia, the new member of the MCG Council of States from Geneva, will now join the SVP parliamentary group after all. Following a rapprochement over the past few days, the SVP announced on Tuesday evening that it had accepted Poggia as a member of the parliamentary group.
An agreement with the SVP allows Poggia to take up seats on committees. The committee seats will be allocated during the winter session.
Poggia told the Keystone-SDA news agency last week that he wanted to retain his independence as a member of the SVP parliamentary group. The SVP parliamentary group allows him to work with it without being integrated.
Poggia said it was a question of striking a balance between efficient council work and consideration for his electorate. After all, his voters do not share all of the SVP's ideas. The fact that he can represent his own ideas, especially on the subject of health, is an important condition for him, said Poggia. And unlike the National Council, the members of the small chamber represent their canton first and only then their party.
For a long time, it was considered likely that Poggia would have to play politics without a parliamentary group and would therefore have had no claim to committee seats. His two party colleagues in the National Council quickly joined the SVP after the election. Poggia himself initially preferred the center, which is not possible according to parliamentary law. The centrist parliamentary group was also not interested.
The former State Councillor Poggia, who is very popular in Geneva, was elected to the Council of States on November 12 together with Carlo Sommaruga (SP). Lisa Mazzone from the Greens lost her seat. The Geneva protest movement MCG is represented in the small chamber for the first time with Mauro Poggia.
