Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida plans to attend the Ukraine summit in Switzerland in mid-June, according to Japanese media reports. Kishida will visit the Bürgenstock NW from southern Italy immediately after the three-day summit of the G7 states of economically strong democracies, several media reported, citing a government source.

At the two-day multinational meeting, Kishida wanted to demonstrate Japan's rejection of the war in Ukraine started by Russia in February 2022 and call on Moscow to withdraw its troops immediately, according to reports.

With Kishida as a representative of a G7 country, the Ukraine conference would be top-class. In addition to Japan, the G7 countries include Germany, France, Italy, Canada, the USA and the UK. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and EU leaders have already confirmed their attendance.

Japan supports Ukraine in its fight against the ongoing Russian invasion and, in line with the West, has also imposed sanctions against Russia. However, the country's pacifist constitution does not allow Japan to supply weapons to Ukraine itself.

In February 2024, Japan hosted a conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine in Tokyo and pledged 15.8 billion yen (USD 101 million) in grants to support the restoration of electricity supply, energy infrastructure and other important projects.

Switzerland and Ukraine are currently campaigning for broad support for the Ukraine Peace Summit on June 15 and 16 at Bürgenstock NW near Lucerne. Up to 160 delegations are to be represented at the conference to discuss peace prospects for Ukraine. Russia has not been invited.
