The online retailer Galaxus is continuing its expansion in Germany. The Migros subsidiary has laid the foundation stone for a new distribution center in Neuenburg am Rhein in southern Germany.
The new logistics center will have a storage area of around 90,000 square meters, Galaxus announced on Wednesday. The opening of the first warehouse is planned for summer 2025. The site will one day employ 1,000 people.
The capacity thus roughly corresponds to that of the current storage site in Wohlen. The project in Neuchâtel currently enjoys top priority, especially as the procedures for the construction of the planned Swiss sites in Utzenstorf and Rafz still need some time, according to the report. The location is "ideal": from there, deliveries can be made quickly to Switzerland, but also to Germany or France.
Backing from Migros
Galaxus owner Migros had already given its blessing for the planned expansion in Germany in September. Despite the Group's restructuring and cost-cutting program, the online platform was assured of financing until 2029. An analysis has shown that the targeted further development of the online business in the European market is promising, according to the statement.
Galaxus Germany was launched in November 2018. According to previous information, the platform has since reached 2.5 million customers and annual sales recently amounted to 286 million euros.
