Center Party President Gerhard Pfister has warned the party base that Switzerland is becoming less cohesive. He also called the economy to account.

Switzerland must be more than a "value-free business platform for everyone", said Pfister at the delegates' meeting in Schwyz on Saturday. An economy without values, an economy that is only committed to profit, would not work.

Switzerland is attractive for the economy precisely because it is more than just a business location, said the Zug National Councillor. It offers legal certainty, stability, social peace and consideration for the weak and minorities.

It should not just be about deregulation, low taxes and the unlimited availability of workers from all over the world, explained Pfister. Direct democracy, political institutions and cohesion are "invaluably more important factors".

Alienation causes concern

Pfister called for the economy to take on more responsibility again. He was concerned that there was an alienation between the economic elite and the population, he said, mentioning executive salaries. The debacle at Credit Suisse had contributed to this.

If the social contract crumbles, social peace and cohesion will be jeopardized and solidarity between the generations will dwindle, said Pfister. Those who defame the commitment to social peace as left-wing have not understood what makes Switzerland successful.

Switzerland needs a social market economy that leaves no one behind, said Pfister. However, he spoke out against aid with a watering can. "Social policy does not mean socialist policy," said the centrist president.
