Several hours before the Champions League match, only a few Serbian fans of Red Star Belgrade were out and about in Bern on Tuesday afternoon. The police were present with a large contingent.

Around a hundred Serbian fans gathered on the square near the Kornhaus. Some also took the opportunity to take photos of the city's sights, as a reporter from the Keystone-SDA news agency reported. Others sang fan songs.

In the evening at 9.00 pm, the local BSC Young Boys will play against Red Star Belgrade at the Wankdorf Stadium. The football match is being played as part of the Champions League. Around 1700 guest fans were expected, as a media spokesperson from BSC Young Boys said on request. The Wankdorf Stadium was sold out.

Increased police presence

The Bern cantonal police were present in the city center with a large contingent, both in vehicles and on foot. They carried out checks on individual Serbian fans.

Due to this additional workload, several police stations remained closed today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday), as the Bern cantonal police reported last week. Only the police stations in Bern, Biel, Thun, Interlaken and Moutier remained open.

Red Star Belgrade already played against Young Boys in Bern in August 2019. There were riots before and after the match. To calm the situation, a police officer had to fire several warning shots into the air. Five people were injured at the time.
