Swiss national teams should be allowed to legally wear the Swiss coat of arms on their shirts in future. The National Council has adopted a motion to amend the Coat of Arms Protection Act accordingly.
The motion by Lucerne FDP member of the Council of States Damian Müller demanded the lawful use of the coat of arms by Swiss national teams. The motion was already adopted by the Council of States in the summer session. The Federal Council will now have to submit an amendment to the law to Parliament.
The debate was prompted by the temporary unlawful use of the crest on the national ice hockey team's jersey. In the meantime, the field hockey association reached a temporary agreement with the responsible federal authority regarding the use of the coat of arms. Since the revised Coat of Arms Protection Act came into force in 2017, only the Confederation is permitted to use the coat of arms.
