The responsible National Council committee rejects cuts to the salaries of members of the Federal Assembly. In an international comparison, the Swiss parliament is one of the most favorable, according to the tenor.
The National Council's Political Institutions Committee (SPK-N) has rejected two parliamentary initiatives by National Councillor Andreas Glarner (SVP/AG) by 15 votes to 9, as reported by the Parliamentary Services on Friday. If the large chamber also says no, the business is done.
Glarner has been targeting parliamentarians' salaries for some time and wants to halve them. He also wants to abolish compensation for attending special sessions.
However, according to the press release, the majority of the SPK-N notes that it is not possible for all members of the Federal Assembly to earn a sufficient income from gainful employment in addition to their intensive parliamentary activities. In addition, special sessions serve to reduce the workload and must be prepared in exactly the same way as ordinary sessions.
The SVP minority in the committee, on the other hand, fears that the Federal Assembly is developing more and more in the direction of a professional parliament, as stated in the communication. It therefore supports both initiatives.
